Experience

Following graduation from Rutgers University, Judge L. Anthony Gibson attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School on a full tuition scholarship. After graduating from law school, he clerked for the Honorable A.J. Cafiero, the Assignment Judge for Vicinage One, which at that time included Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem Counties.
Upon completion of his clerkship, Judge Gibson entered private practice, and shortly thereafter, he founded the firm which became Gibson, Previti and Todd. In 1977, he was appointed to the Atlantic County Court, and in 1979, he was elevated to the Superior Court. After serving on the bench for only four years, Judge Gibson was appointed by Chief Justice R. Wilentz to the prestigious position of Presiding Judge of the Chancery Division (General Equity) for Vicinage One. In this position, Judge Gibson presided over a number of high-profile and complex cases stemming from Atlantic County’s considerable economic expansion. He was also temporarily assigned to the Appellate Division in 1988, and he was appointed by the Supreme Court to serve as one of only three judges assigned to handle Mount Laurel housing lawsuits. Judge Gibson has also served as a member of several Supreme Court Committees, given lectures on the law to both lawyers and judges, and served as an adjunct professor at Widener University School of Law.
After his retirement, Judge Gibson has served as a mediator and arbitrator of commercial disputes, personal injury claims, insurance coverage issues, construction disputes, environmental damage claims, probate matters, real estate issues and employment cases. Since retiring from the bench in 2000, he has mediated or arbitrated over 800 cases throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Judge Gibson has also acted as special master and discovery master in federal and state actions for cases involving clients such as Viacom, ITT, Caesars International, Trump Casino, State of New Jersey, Smith Kline Beecham and Aetna Insurance Company. Judge Gibson is “of counsel” to D’Arcy Johnson Day, focusing on mediation.
