Avanzar Honors Patrick and Andrew D’Arcy as Local Heroes

When the investigation into the murder of veterans’ advocate April Kauffman stalled for more than 18 months, Patrick and Andrew D’Arcy of the D’Arcy Johnson Day law firm helped Kauffman’s daughter, Kimberly Pack, take action that brought new information and energy to the case, ultimately helping the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office bring the responsible parties to justice.. As a result, Patrick and Andrew were recently honored as local heroes at Avanzar’s “Evening in Spring.”

Nominated by Kimberly Pack for their vital role in the resolution of her mother’s murder case, brothers Patrick and Andrew D’Arcy are partners in the law firm, D’Arcy Johnson Day in Egg Harbor Township. Primarily civil trial attorneys that handle medical malpractice and personal injury actions, they were hired by Kim when she was being sued by her step-father, Dr. James Kauffman, for the life insurance proceeds on behalf of her mom, April Kauffman. April was brutally murdered in her home on May 10, 2012. Kim had been turned down by high profile Philadelphia firms.

Over a year and a half had passed since the murder when Kim hired the D’Arcy brothers. The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office was at a standstill. Kim, Pat and Andy reversed course and countersued Dr. Kauffman for the murder of April Kauffman. They worked tirelessly, obtaining evidence, such as more than 50 witness statements and 10 depositions, including a 4.5 hour deposition of Dr. James Kauffman. They were able to hand over their road map of information to the new Prosecutor, which resulted in bringing Dr. Kauffman to justice. The law firm’s efforts to prove Dr. Kauffman’s involvement in the murder were featured in coverage in a variety of media outlets, including a feature story on ABC’s 20/20.

Formerly known as The Women’s Center of Atlantic County, Avanzar strives to empower individuals and families by working to secure their physical safety, emotional well-being, individual freedom, and economic equality. The nonprofit organization serves a diverse clientele, including victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and racial inequality. Other honorees at the “Evening in Spring” included Kimberly Pack; Amy Gatto, Chair of the Atlantic County Board of Chosen Freeholders; Margaret Belfield, Chief Operating Officer of AtlantiCare; and Tamu Lane, Director of Social Justice Programming for Avanzar.
