After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers College and a Juris Doctorate from Boston University, Peter Smith began a law career that includes litigating complex disputes in mediation and arbitration, as well as the state, federal, and bankruptcy courts of New York and New Jersey. Experienced in the areas of contract disputes, construction payment claims and construction defects, shareholder disputes and business dissolution, Peter is also well versed in the areas of fraud, RICO, and business torts, as well as real estate, investment, and income tax disputes.
His extensive knowledge also extends to the areas of matrimonial law, divorce, and domestic partnership dissolution, lender liability, and debtor defenses in foreclosure and bankruptcy, insurance, surety, and fidelity bond claims, contested guardianship, and judgment enforcement.
Peter has extensive trial and appellate experience in state and federal courts, including arguments before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Second and Eighth Circuits. Prior to joining D’Arcy Johnson Day, he served as a senior member of the team representing more than 1,000 victims in the high-profile Bernard Madoff case, litigating critical issues concerning the Madoff bankruptcy and handling class action suits by victims against individuals and entities that participated in Madoff’s fraud.
